Giving yourself a challenge
How will you challenge yourself in your coaching practice?
The first part of the year is a great time to think about what we’d like to try or challenge ourselves with.
Challenges and goals aren’t just for players. When giving yourself a challenge at training you can share it with your co-coaches, track it on your phone or share it with your support network.
Giving yourself a challenge is important, but the reflection afterwards and during is just as important. Make sure you’ve got someone you can reflect with. (If you don’t have anyone/want to chat with someone different you can send me a DM on substack)
When reflecting on the challenge, think about the effect it had on you, other coaches and the players.
If you need ideas for challenges, here are some you can try:
In an activity, only coach 1-2-1 with players.
Plan and coach through 1 game for the majority of the session. You can change rules and adapt to escalate the challenge level of the game.
In a huddle, players must speak first.
Give positive feedback to 10 players.
Check in with every player across the session.
Give positive feedback to your other coaches.
Players must referee the game (what does this give you time to do?)
Ask 20 questions across the session
Give players 5 opportunities to problem-solve (in pairs, groups or teams)
I’d love to know what challenge you’re giving yourself for your next few sessions. Comment them below!
(Shoutout to Russell Earnshaw’s Magic Academy Coach Challenges cards which I use alot in my own practice!)
Did you know there’s a subscription option for Coaching Care Creativity? Nothing is behind a paywall so your subscriptions or coffee clicks can help keep the content going. The subscriptions are £5 a month or £50 for the year. You can also buy me a one-off coffee for just £5.
