Shutting out one of your senses
Join me in a short reflection - something I'm trying at training to help me notice different things
What do I notice when I’m observing an activity or a session?
What do I give attention to?
How does my observing impact a session?
I’ve been trying a different way of noticing and reflecting in action during sessions. I will set up an activity and shut my eyes.
This might only be for 10 seconds. It allows me to listen and focus on what hearing the sounds of the activity might tell me.
It allows me to listen to the aural communication. I think about who’s speaking and not speaking. I pay attention to the quality of the communication, without letting visual stimuli distract me.
I also listen to the rhythm of the activity and the players. I listen to the movement of the boots on the ground and the sounds of the passes.
I reflect on whether the rhythm of the activity matches my intention around the session and what the players would like to gain out of it.
This helps me focus on all aspects of the activity, not just what I am observing with my eyes.
I’m still trialling this. At the moment, it’s helping me remove some stimuli and focus on different things, including the rhythm of the activity.
