Try at training: kickpass game
This game has levels that you can adapt for your team. Get them working on a range of attacking skills
This game comes from Steve Hanna, who is Academy Operations Manager at Leicester Tigers. After seeing him coach this game, I’ve used it across my recent sessions.
The kickpass game encourages players to use a kick in attack, as a way to move the ball to a player in space.
Here’s how to build the game into a session (with levels):
ROK game:
Set up a playing area
Split players into two teams
Level 1:
I often start this game from a rugby netball or multidirectional touch start. This helps players begin the game from a familiar activity. Here’s how I would begin the game:
Players aim to score on the opposition tryline.
If the ball carrier gets touch tackled, they must stop and pass to a teammate.
The ball can be passed in any direction.
Level 2:
Players can now choose whether to kick or pass after they’ve been touch tackled.
The kick must be a kick pass to a teammate.
Level 3:
Teams now alternate between kicking and passing.
If a player recieved a kick, they must pass after the touch tackle.
If a player recieved a pass, they must kick after the touch tackle.
When the game restarts (after a try is scored), the player can choose how whether to run, pass or kick.
This game works great to build in some levels after a warm up. You can also sandwich it between an activity that helps players develop their kicking.
Going back into the kickpass game after can help players reflect on any improvement in their kicking. It also puts the skill back into some context by adding defenders and decision-making.
As with all of the activities on here, please feel free to adapt the activity to suit your practice and your players.
