Two-sports-in-one, let's work on grubbers
People who have subcribed for a while will know I love an activity that merges different sports together. Here's one you can use for a cool down game that also works on grubber kicks.
I really value cooldown games. In a previous post, I discussed the benefits of including them in your session. They’re useful for any players who are going through the menopause and they help with transitioning people out of a session.
I was recently guest coaching at session for Lincoln girls section and used a new cooldown game. It’s a blend of netball and football and gets players developing their grubber kick skills.
Here’s how to play the game:
Set up the playing area similar to the picture above.
The scoring lines should have several cones with roughly equal spaces between them.
The space between the cones function as football goals.
Players can’t run with the ball, but can pass in any direction (similar to netball rules).
Teams score by kicking the ball through any of the opposition goals (the spaces between the cones) (similar to football).
The ball must be a low kick, which helps players develop their grubber kick skills.
Adaptations
Start with a football, this helps develop confidence with kicking. Add a progression by switching to a rugby ball.
You could also use this as a warm up game and progress this by allowing players to run with the ball. If they get touch tackled, players must stop and can pass in any direction.
Why this game might work for you
As well as being a different cool down game to add to your training (or a game idea you can adapt for the main part of your session), this activity helps develop players’ grubber kick skills.
By using the low kick rule to score in a multidirectional game, it challenges players to kick through a group of defenders and into space.
