Ways to prepare for the World Cup part 4: Theme your sessions
The World Cup is almost here! Bring the excitement to your next training session
The World Cup will kick off soon. It’s an exciting time for all clubs and teams, whether you’re based in the host nation or not.
This is part 4 of the World Cup series. Here’s the first in the series:
You can bring the excitement to training and theme a session or several activities on the World Cup and your team’s favourite players.
Here’s a few ideas:
Run a mini World Cup competition
Split players into several teams
Players pick which team they want to play as (Black Ferns, Red Roses etc)
Teams must aim to play like their chosen World Cup team
Play a tournament style event with a training game of your choice
The scoring system could be based on most tries scored or an objective related to your team/training. For example: number of tries scored from kicks or best try celebration.
The winning team get a reward, such as being piggybacked to their drinks
Play like your idol 1
Ask players to name or write down some of the abilities of their favourite players. For example: Sarah Bern or Ruby Tui
You and the players come up with different challenges relating to those players. For example: The Meg Jones challenge could be to use footwork to evade at least one player.
Play a game with standard rules for your training session (touch, grab etc)
The first team to complete all of the challenges wins the game.
Play like your idol 2
Get players to name or write down some of the abilities of their favourite players. For example: Sarah Bern or Ruby Tui
Ask them to think of a player they will play like.
Play a game with standard rules for your training session (touch, grab etc)
Players play the game using skills similar to their favourite player
Teams get a point for guessing who an opposition player is playing as.
Guess the team
Split players into two teams
Players pick a World Cup team (Black Ferns, Red Roses etc)
Play a game with standard rules for your training session (touch, grab etc)
Teams play in the style of their chosen World Cup team.
Players guess who their opposition team is playing like
If they guess correctly they win the game
